Northam's List
When the Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15th 1912, she took with her the lives of over 1500 people. Amongst them were 549 crew whose hometown was Southampton. The city supplied men for all parts of the ship from the boiler rooms to the kitchens; few parts of the city did not feel the impact of the tragedy.

Only a week after the Titanic had majestically glided down Southampton Water, crowds were jostling around the White Star offices in Canute Road, waiting for news of loved ones.

The Northam district, close to the docks, was particularly badly hit: Northam School had 140 children who lost fathers, brothers or uncles; Nichols Street was home to twenty families who lost someone in the tragedy.

Today, there are a number of memorials around the city commemorating those who lost their lives on that fateful voyage, including memorials to the engineers, and bandsmen.

One of many fine songs written by local songwriter Barry Wake.
